“Registered” dates come from the official registry record (RDAP). Some country registries (for example .eu and .de) do not publish this date – for those we show the first time the site was seen online, marked “≥”, so the real age may be older.

What is domain age?

Domain age is the time since a domain name was first registered. A domain registered in March 2012 is more than 14 years old today, no matter how often the website on it has changed. The date comes from the registry that manages the domain ending – for example Verisign for .com and .net.

Why check the age of a domain?

  • Vetting guest post and link sellers. A site registered a few months ago with a very high Domain Rating is often an expired domain or part of a link network. Age helps you spot those quickly.
  • Buying expired or aged domains. Confirm the age a seller claims before you pay. Read our expired domain checklist.
  • Checking a business or shop. A brand-new domain behind an online store or investment offer is a reason to look more carefully.
  • Competitor research. See how long the sites that outrank you have been around.

How this domain age checker works

  1. Paste or upload your list. Full URLs are fine – we keep only the domain and remove duplicates.
  2. We ask the registry. For each domain we read the official registration record using RDAP, the modern replacement for WHOIS.
  3. Fallback for closed registries. If a registry does not publish the date, we show the first time the website was seen online (from the Wayback Machine) and mark it with “≥”.
  4. Sort, filter and export. Sort by age, filter by age band, copy to a spreadsheet or download a CSV.

Does domain age help SEO?

Not directly. Google has said that domain age by itself is not a ranking factor. Older domains often rank better because they have had more time to earn links and build content – not because of the date itself. That is why domain age is most useful as context next to authority metrics such as Ahrefs DR and organic traffic. Our article on DR vs traffic explains how to combine them.

Registration date vs “first seen online”

The registration date is the official start of the domain. “First seen online” is the earliest snapshot of the website in the public web archive. A website can go live months or years after the domain was registered, and a domain can also expire and be registered again by someone new. When it matters – for example before buying a domain – compare both dates and look at the site’s history.

Domain age questions

Is the domain age checker free?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no signup and never uses DR credits.
How many domains can I check at once?
Up to 500 domains per run. Duplicates and full URLs are cleaned automatically.
Where does the registration date come from?
From the official registry record via RDAP, the modern replacement for WHOIS. It is the same source registrars use.
Why does a domain show “≥” or “first seen”?
Some registries, such as those for .eu and .de, do not publish the registration date. For those domains we show the first time the website was seen online, so the real age may be older.
Is domain age a Google ranking factor?
Not by itself. Older domains often rank better because they have had more time to earn links and build content, not because of the date.
Can I check subdomains?
Yes. A subdomain such as blog.example.com shows the age of its main domain, example.com.
